The Spookiest Pests In Arizona

The Spookiest Pests In Arizona

October is here, and while Halloween decorations are all over Arizona, you may encounter a few creepy crawlers that aren’t decorations at all.

Arizona is home to plenty of pests that can look like they belong in a horror movie. From scorpions hiding in dark spaces to strange noises coming from the attic at night, here are some of the spookiest pests you might find around your Arizona home or business.

Scorpions

Few Arizona pests have a reputation quite like the scorpion. These nocturnal pests often spend the day hiding in cracks, block walls, landscaping, garages, and other protected areas before becoming more active at night.

As temperatures begin to change in the fall, scorpions are still active around homes and businesses. Sealing potential entry points and maintaining a consistent pest management plan can help reduce scorpion activity around your property.

Black Widows

A shiny black spider with a red hourglass marking is enough to make just about anyone keep their distance.

Black widow spiders prefer dark, protected areas where they are less likely to be disturbed. Garages, sheds, patio furniture, wood piles, and cluttered areas can all provide potential hiding spots.

Keeping these areas clean and reducing other insects around your property can help make your home less inviting to spiders.

Tarantulas

They may be large, hairy, and intimidating, but tarantulas generally aren’t as frightening as they look. Arizona is home to several species, and they can occasionally be spotted wandering across yards, roads, and desert areas.

Tarantulas typically prefer to avoid people and spend much of their time in burrows. Still, seeing one unexpectedly around your property can certainly provide a Halloween-worthy surprise.

Centipedes

With long bodies, numerous legs, and quick movements, centipedes easily earn a place on our list.

Arizona is home to large centipedes that may be found beneath rocks, landscaping materials, wood, and other protected areas. Centipedes are predators that feed on insects and other small creatures, so increased pest activity around a property can provide them with a potential food source.

Roof Rats

Sometimes the scariest pest is the one you hear but can’t see.

Scratching, scurrying, or movement coming from the attic or walls at night can be a sign of rodent activity. Roof rats are excellent climbers and may use trees, utility lines, roofs, and other access points to reach a home.

Once inside, rodents can damage materials, contaminate areas, and become difficult to remove.
